Japan Travel – Sensoji Temple (浅草寺)

Initially, I was intending to close this blog. Unfortunately, due to my crazy work schedule, I forgot to remove the auto renewal of this blog hence since it has been renewed, might as well update the blog with my travel news 🤣

A week of shop, eat and sleep in Tokyo… finally today we managed find time to check out the nearby Sensoji Temple.

Sensoji Temple, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple, is one of the oldest temple in Tokyo. It is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa area.

The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River. Though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. 

Heading to the temple, you will first enter through the Kaminarimon, also known as Thunder Gate. It is the outer gate of Sensoji Temple and is also known as the symbol of Asakusa.

Just before Sensoji Temple, there is a shopping street called Nakamise. This leads from the outer gate to the temple’s second gate, the Hozomon.

A place worth exploring as there are many typical Japanese souvenirs that are available here. It is said that this shopping street has a history of several centuries.

A beautiful evening stroll despite the drizzle. So, if you are ever in that area, do check this beautiful Sensoji Temple out.

Sensoji Temple is a few steps from Asakusa Station, served by the Ginza Subway Line, Asakusa Subway Line and Tobu Railways.

From Tokyo Station

Take the JR Yamanote Line to Kanda Station (2 minutes, 140 yen) and transfer to the Ginza Subway Line for Asakusa (10 minutes, 170 yen).

From Shinjuku Station

Take the orange JR Chuo Line to Kanda Station (10 minutes, 170 yen) and transfer to the Ginza Subway Line for Asakusa (10 minutes, 170 yen).
