A morning out @ Nagoya Castle (名古屋城)

Nagoya (名古屋市), located in the Chubu Region of Japan is one of the largest city in the region. Japan’s third largest incorporated city as well as the fourth most populated urban area, it is located on the pacific coast on central Honshu.

Our first exploration start from Nagoya Castle (名古屋城). The journey started where we took the Higashiyama Subway Line from Nagoya Station to Sakae Station and then change to Meijo Subway where we got off at Shiyakusho Station. The whole journey took approximately only 10 minutes and costs 230 yen.

From the station, we took a 3 minutes’ walk to Nagoya Castle’s east gate. Admission fees @ 500 yen.

Nagoya Castle (名古屋城), built in the beginning of the Edo Period was one of the largest and most important castles in the country with the castle town surrounding it ultimately became Japan’s fourth largest city.

Most part of the castle were destroyed in the air raids back in 1945. The current ferro-concrete reconstruction of the castle is back dated as back as 1959 which also contain a modern museum exhibiting the castle history. Today, surrounding the castle is the two circles of moats and impressive walls with turrets corner.

When we visited, the castle was still being reconstructed, however we were privileged to be able to see the castle’s palace (Honmaru Goten) that has been rebuilt using traditional construction materials and techniques. Here, we were able explore the main hall where beautiful replicated paintings were featured on the sliding doors (fusuma).

It is estimated that the fully completed palace is scheduled to open in 2018. With that, we hope that we would be able to return upon the total completion for further exploration of Nagoya Castle (名古屋城).
